Under the direction of the Director of the Desert Studies Center and with the support of the President of Anbar University, the Center has successfully cultivated the Pepino melon (also known as the watermelon pear) and produced its medicinal fruits, particularly in desert areas.
Professor Ali Fadam Al-Mohammadi of the Department of Conservation Agriculture led these successful efforts to cultivate this fruit in Anbar Governorate, western Iraq. The Pepino melon, a plant native to Latin America and belonging to the Solanaceae family, is known for its nutritional, economic, and medicinal value.
This fruit is rich in antioxidants and helps detoxify the liver, relieve kidney pain, boost the immune system, and lower blood pressure. It also contains essential vitamins and minerals such as vitamin C, potassium, iron, beta-carotene, and dietary fiber, and is low in calories.
The Center also emphasized the development of scientific recommendations for optimal agricultural practices to encourage farmers and specialists to adopt this promising crop and maximize its health and economic benefits.
We commend the distinguished efforts made in serving our university and our beloved country.
